Below is a screenshot of the Image Prep Tool in use. Some of the options are self evident, but the information below the picture may be useful. Clicking on a particular area on the screenshot will allow you to quickly jump to its description.

Image Prep Tool

Windows Settings

User Name - Enter a generic name that will be used as the registered user name for Windows. 'Authorised User' or 'The Head Teacher' are the most commonly used names in schools.

Organisation - Enter the name that will be used as the registered organisation name for Windows. In most cases this will be the name of the school.

Product Key - If your image is based on a volume license version of Windows (supplied via a Schools Agreement or Select License) you can use the same code on every computer. You should enter the product code in the text box so that you don't have to enter it when rolling the image out.

If your Windows image is based on an OEM copy of Windows (supplied pre-installed on the computer by the manufacturer) the license code cannot be used on more than one computer. You will need to leave the product key text box empty and use the code supplied with the computer during the image rollout.

Domain Details

Domain Name - Enter the NETBios domain name that computers using this image should attempt to join during the image rollout.

User Name - Enter the domain user account name (usually an administrative level user) that will be used in the domain join process.

Use of a normal user account (such as the Administrator user shown above) is not normally recommended because future rollouts will fail if the user has changed their password.

It is recommended that a specific user account be created for this purpose. The account can be kept disabled most of the time and enabled as and when images need to be rolled out.

Password - Enter the password for the user account that will be used to join the computer to the domain.

Confirmation - Confirm the password for the user account that will be used to join the computer to the domain.

Administrator Password

Password - Enter the local Administrator account password.

Confirmation - Confirm the local Administrator account password.

Additional Settings

Shutdown - Select if the tool should shutdown windows, restart or just exit once SysPrep has finished resetting the computer.

On computers with a SchoolSuite backup partition and the correct virtual disk you can also opt to have the Image Prep Tool start the image backup process.

Mass Storage - If the image is likely to be used on a variety of hardware resetting the mass storage controller list is a good idea.

Enabling this option will force SysPrep to create a list of storage controllers that windows will be able to boot from after restarting.

The downside to enabling this option is that the SysPrep process will take anything up to an hour to complete, as opposed to the usual two or three minutes.

System HAL - This option should only be changed in very specific circumstances and only once you have a backup image you can restore from, as changing this option is liable to render the image unusable on the computer that generated it.

The purpose of this option is to allow the image to be used on a computer that is incompatible with the system that generated it.

To test the performance of different HALs on a system we recommend using the HAL Test Wizard to create a recovery menu.

System Kernel - This is a similar option to the System HAL setting, but allows you to select which kernel should be used in the new image instead. This option is most likely to be changed to turn off support for multiple processors in the image.

This setting comes with the same warnings as changing the System HAL, though an incorrect selection is unlikely to have such severe consequences as choosing the incorrect HAL.

Changes to this setting can also be tested using using the HAL Test Wizard to create a recovery menu.

Sophos - This option will only be displayed if the Image Prep Tool detects that Sophos Anti-Virus version 4.5 or later is installed.

Sophos released a knowledgebase article recommending a specific course of action that should be followed when resetting the computer.

If this option is enabled the Image Prep Tool will stop the services and delete the registry keys Sophos recommend prior to running SysPrep.
